1. Kamika Ekadashi’s Story

Once upon a time, there lived a landlord in a village. One day, the landlord fought with a Brahmin and killed him by accident. The landlord realised his mistakes and wanted forgiveness by being a part of his cremation ritual, but the villagers refused. 

Instead, he was cursed with a Brahmin’s killing. The landlord approached a Guru who advised him to keep a fast on the Kamika Ekadashi to get rid of his sin. He also advised him to worship Lord Vishnu while keeping the fast.

That night, Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and freed him from his mistake. Since then, people have started believing that following this ritual will not only stop them from negative thoughts but also relieve them from their past mistakes. 

2. Kamika Ekadashi Significance

The Kamika Ekadashi pleases Lord Vishnu, and the Kamika Ekadashi meaning devotees who do the Vrat, remove the past sins they have committed. The story of the Kamika Ekadashi reflects how doing this Vrat gives us opportunities to release ourselves from the burden of our sins.

1. Vrat Procedure 

  • Kamika Ekadashi fast starts in the early morning, and the Vrat Sankalp has to be taken after taking a shower in the morning. 
  • In Kamika Ekadashi fast, we should worship Lord Vishnu.
  • However, it is suggested that you keep fast, the way your body and mind are comfortable. It is known that doing Nirjala Vrat is the best fasting practice.  
  • For people who have kept the Kamika Ekadashi fast, the breaking of the fast should be done with the prayer – “Om Namoh Bhagwate Basudevaya Namah”,ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय नम:”
  • You can feed the Brahmins the next day of Kamika Ekadashi for the blessing of Lord Vishnu.

  • Taking a shower early in the morning
  • Taking Sankalp of the Vrat
  • Lighten Ghee diya in the temple in the morning
  • Offer fresh flowers and Tulsi to Lord Vishnu

  • Water should be offered to Lord Vishnu if there is a fight existing in the family.
  • Read Bhagwat Gita to get the blessing of the Lord Vishnu and your ancestors.
  • Offer a flute to Lord Vishnu to seek happiness and blessing from him.
  • Diya in front of the Tulsi plant and chant the Mantra of Lord Vishnu – “Om Namoh Bhagwate Basudevaya Namah”.
  • Hawan can be performed for Lord Vishnu in times of stress at home.

  • Stay calm during the Kamika Ekadashi fast.

  • Having drugs, alcohol and smoking is not allowed during the fast time.
