Why did Lord Shiva behead Lord Brahma?
Varuthini is a Sanskrit word meaning protected, and Ekadashi means the 11th day of the lunar fortnight. The celebration of Varuthini Ekadashi is linked to Lord Shiva’s history. Once, Lord Shiva was angry, and in a rage, he beheaded Lord Brahma’s fifth head, which made Lord Brahma curse Lord Shiva.

Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat Katha
In ancient times, King Mandhata ruled by the banks of the Narmada River. He was known for being generous and devoted to religion. One day, while meditating in the forest, a wild bear began chewing on the king’s leg. Despite the pain, the king remained focused on his meditation. After chewing his leg, the bear dragged the king deeper into the forest.
Moreover, the king regained consciousness and was terrified. However, being deeply religious, he began praying to Lord Vishnu and seeking his help. Responding to the king’s prayer, Lord Vishnu appeared and killed the bear with his chakra.
When King Mandhata went to Mathura
Unfortunately, the bear had already eaten the king’s leg, leaving him heartbroken. Seeing his sorrow, Lord Vishnu spoke to the king, saying, “Do not grieve, O calf. Go to Mathura, observe the Varuthini Ekadashi fast, and worship my Varaha Avatar. The power will restore your limbs. Your past life’s sins resulted in the bear’s actions.
