Deepawali, lovingly called Diwali, is a festival that takes place on the new moon night in the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month of the Hindu Calendar. Kartik month’s Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha will end at 4.44 p.m. on October 24. Thus, Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali fall on October 24, 2022. The first solar eclipse this year, also visible in India, comes on Diwali. People are uncertain and confused about whether Diwali to observe at this time or not, as the solar eclipse will be observed at the same time. Whether we will worship the gods of fortune and auspiciousness Ganesh and Lakshmi during the Surya Grahan or not, and when will it happen? InstaAstro is here to give you the answers and you can find more about the auspicious dates in your life through the Kundli.

Why are we talking about Lakshmi Pooja on Diwali?

Diwali is a celebration of the union of the goddess of riches, Lakshmi, with Lord Vishnu. Others use it to commemorate Lakshmi’s birthday as it is believed that she was born on the day of the Kartik new moon.

What is the concern with the Solar Eclipse?

Khandagras solar eclipse will occur on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, the new moon night of Kartik Krishna Paksha. One thing to remember is that no matter what the eclipse is, there is no need to be concerned. As it is the biggest festival of siddhis, the sages named it Siddhikal. During the eclipse, Lord Shri Ram was initiated by Guru Vashishtha and Shri Krishna by Guru Sandeepan. A solar eclipse after sunset has no adverse consequences.

Surya Grahan on Diwali

Diwali Lakshmi Puja takes place during Amavasya because of the day’s religious importance. Scientifically speaking, the Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse) only happens on Amavasya or the day of the new Moon. Therefore, it is not surprising that Surya Grahan frequently falls on Diwali Puja day. Surya Grahan, however, is only available on a small portion of the earth’s surface.

Surya Grahan hasn’t been visible in India at Diwali for many years, although it has in other nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, and Canada. Even though there is a sizable Indian diaspora in each of these nations, they rarely hear about Grahan during Diwali Puja. There is tremendous chaos every time Surya Grahan happens on Diwali in India.

The geography of this eclipse

Most pundits and astrologers in India concur that none of the Surya Grahan rituals should take place if the Sun is not visible in your region. No rites should take place in India if Surya Grahan is only visible there, and vice versa. Nirnay Sindhu and Dharma Sindhu are in charge. These writings state that there is no need for purifying baths or charitable deeds if Surya Grahan occurs at night and Chandra Grahan occurs during the day. Despite being visible in some areas of the country, Punya Kala during Grahan finishes the moment it becomes invisible to the human sight. This is something that Dharma Sindhu makes very plain.

Is the pooja restricted to the Grahan?

The notion that one cannot perform the Puja during Solar Eclipse on Diwali 2022 is mentioned in several articles written for well-known publications and websites. However, according to Nirnay Sindhu and Dharma Sindhu, doing Homa, Deva Puja, and mantra chanting are necessary Grahan practices. The advantages of Puja and Homa during Grahan multiply significantly.  Numerous Hindu religious texts advise having a bath before Grahan, conducting Homa and Puja during Grahan, and then taking a bath and giving to charity after Grahan. Activities to avoid are: Sleeping, sex, restroom use, self-easement, massage, and eating. No religious text forbids performing Lakshmi Puja or any other Puja during Grahan.

Additionally, during Pradosh, the best time to do Lakshmi Puja is after sunset. As a result, since Surya Deva is not in place, it is not even feasible to do Lakshmi Puja during Grahan.

What about the Sutak?

Sutak is the four-prahar period preceding Surya Grahan, which forbids any actions connecting sensual enjoyment. Vedic astrology states that there are eight Prahar from sunrise to dawn, with four Prahar roughly equating to twelve hours. The Sutak starts out after Missal starts and continues until or shortly after Madrasah ends. Also, the Sutak should only consider three Muhurats, or around two hours and twenty-four minutes, for teenagers, the elderly, and people who are ill.

Assuming that Lakshmi Puja is not allowed throughout Grahan, including the Sutak period, Sutak does not apply for Lakshmi Puja during Pradosh due to its timings. We must consider two options or potential outcomes when considering the Sutak window during Surya Grahan on Diwali. According to the first belief, the Surya Grahan might occur on the actual day of Lakshmi Puja. If so, Sutak may continue till dusk, at which point one may do Lakshmi Puja and take a purifying bath. The Surya Grahan might also take effect the day after Lakshmi Puja, the second alternative.

Lakshmi Puja is conducted after dusk during Pradosh
therefore, it may typically be done before Sutak starts since, in most regions, there will be a break of around twelve hours between Pradosh and the start of Surya Grahan the next day after sunrise.

Conclusion

Being a major Indian festival, Diwali’s origins tarce back to ancient India. It is a celebration of the marriage of the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, and Lord Vishnu. Since Goddess Lakshmi was born on the day of the Kartik new moon, some people utilize it to celebrate her birthday. The Bengali celebration honors Mother Kali, the powerful deity. On this day, most Hindu homes also worship Lord Ganesha. He is the god with an elephant head who represents luck and intelligence. In Jainism, Diwali also serves as a memorial for the historical moment. Lord Mahavira attained nirvana or the state of eternal bliss on this day. Diwali also honors the defeat of the evil king Ravana and the homecoming of Lord Rama (together with Ma Sita and Lakshman) after his 14-year exile. The inhabitants of Rama’s kingdom, Ayodhya, lit clay diyas (oil lamps) and fired off firecrackers in a jubilant celebration of their king’s return.
