What is Nagula Chavithi?

We dedicate the festival of Nagula Chavithi to the worship of snakes. It falls on the fourth day of the Kartik month after Amavasya. The other name of Nagula Chavithi is Naga Chaturthi. People celebrate the festival in southern India, mainly in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The nag devatas (Snake Gods) are worshipped in Nagula Chavithi.

On this day, mothers fast for the well-being of their children. We call the Hindu Gods – Shiva ( Naga Bhushana), Vishnu ( Shesha Thalpa Sai), Kartikeya (Naga Swarupa) and Ganesha ( Naga Yajnopaveetha). The Ashtanga (eight-hooded cobra) is worshipped, and milk, eggs, and dry fruits are offered. The date of Nagula Chavithi this year is 5 November 2024.

Story And Importance of the Festival

The festival Nagula Chavithi has many legends behind it. A legend of Nagula Chavithi tells us about the Samudra Manthan, where Devtas and Asuras churned the ocean of milk to get the Amrita( nectar of immortality). A serpent was used as a rope to get the nectar, which gave out a dangerous poison that had adverse effects.

Lord Shiva swallowed the poison and became known as Neelkantha. Unfortunately, a few drops of it fell on the ground. To protect ourselves from the poison’s adverse effects, we worship the snake Gods.

Since then, Lord Shiva has wrapped Vasuki around his neck. The serpent says he is lifeless without Lord Shiva, and they share a divine friendship.

Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that the Vasuki represents him among other nagas and serpents in the Bhagavad Gita. In Bhagavata Prana, the eleven snakes form the chariot of the Sun God. Again, like every year, we can celebrate Nagula Chavithi. This year, the date of Nagula Chavithi is 5 November 2024.
