Mohini Ekadashi: Mythology & Vrat Katha

Let us now look at the mythology story that connects us with Mohini Ekadashi’s importance and its Vrat Katha.

1. Mythological Story Of Mohini Ekadashi 2025

A businessman named Dhanpal once lived in the Bhadravati Kingdom on the banks of the Saraswati River. He was a pure soul who feared God and engaged in almost all sorts of charity works. The king lived peacefully and was happily married. He also had five sons: Suman, Sadbuddhi, Medhavi, Sukriti, and Drishthabuddhi.

However, his eldest son, Drishthabuddhi, was quite different from Dhanpal. He was reckless, impolite, and undisciplined. Seeing this nature of his son, Dhanpal was very concerned for his son’s future. He tried everything he could to bring his son on the right track.

Drishthabuddhi met Guru Kaundinya

Despite numerous attempts, Dhanpal failed and thought of finally disowning his son. However, after the son was disowned, he started stealing and looting. His actions troubled the village, and the villagers threw him into the forest.

While in the forest, Drishthabuddhi met a spiritual Guru named Kaundinya. He was influenced by him and confessed all his sins before the Guru. The Guru advised him to observe a fast on Mohini Ekadashi to banish his sins. To remove his sins and purify his soul, Dhanpal’s son kept the fast successfully and got rid of his sins.

2. Mohini Ekadashi Vrat Katha

According to the Hindu scriptures, Mohini is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. During the Samundra months, Devas and Asuras fought over who would consume the Amrit.

Seeing the dire conditions of the fight, all the Devas went to Lord Vishnu and asked for his help. Upon hearing the Devas’ concern, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini. He lured all the Asuras towards him, diverting their minds from the Amrit.

While the Asuras lustred over Mohini, the Devas took the Amrit. This is the significance of Mohini Ekadashi and why it is celebrated. King Yudhishthira and Lord Rama also observed this fast.
