According to Hindu mythology, there was a famous religious King named Mahidwaj who was following the right path towards spirituality. Mahidwaj had a younger brother named Vajra Dhwaj, who had feelings of hate and jealousy towards him.
Because of this anger and hatred, Vajra Dhwaj murdered Mahidwaj and hid his body under a peepal tree. Due to his unnatural death, Mahidwaj was not able to attain peace and became a restless spirit. He used to haunt everyone.
One day, a sage passing by sensed the presence of the troubled spirit. Using his divine powers, the sage learned about Mahidwaj’s tragic fate and the reason behind his restless state. The sage decided to help Mahidwaj attain peace.
He brought down the spirit of Mahidwaj from the tree and guided him on the path to freedom and peace. To aid the spirit further, the sage asked him to keep fast on the Apara Ekadashi Vrat himself, dedicating all the honesty and spiritual benefits of the fast to Mahidwaj.
With the powerful impact of the Apara Ekadashi Vrat and the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Mahidwaj’s spirit was freed and attained peace. Since then, devotees have observed the Apara Ekadashi fast to do good karma and progress on their path to peace, inspired by the story of King Mahidwaj.
