Who was Surdas?

He was born Blind, as his name suggests, ‘Sur,’ which means ‘Servant of the Sun’.

His family did not love him and neglected him because of his blindness, so he left his home at the young age of 6. After a while, he got the chance to meet Shri Vallabhacharya, and Surdas soon became his disciple. Vallabhacharya influenced Surdas to worship Lord Krishna.

Surdas And His Vision of Lord Krishna

One day, a group of people doubtful of Surdas’ devotion to Krishna decided to test his loyalty. They invited him to a religious gathering and asked him to prove his insight into Krishna. However, Surdas, on the contrary, said that he could not see Krishna physically but felt his presence spiritually.

So, to test, they placed an idol of Krishna and asked Surdas to describe it. To everyone’s surprise, Surdas, unaware of the idol, began singing about Krishna’s enchanting beauty and playfulness in Vraj.

Everyone was shocked by this incident, and from then on, Surdas was considered a great devotee of Krishna. His vision of Krishna was unmatched and from the heart.

One can start by cleaning and purifying the area designated for worship with gangajal or clean water.
Place the photo frame or idol of Surdas and Lord Krishna on a holy table.
Start the puja by lighting a lamp, diya or an incense stick to create a spiritual ambience.
Offer fresh flowers and holy leaves on the idol or photo to show gratitude and respect.
Offer fruits or sweets to the idol or photo with a pure heart.
Sing some famous hymns by Surdas to express deep love and devotion.
Perform an aarti with a ghee-lit lamp as a symbol of enlightenment and prayer.
Also, sit in meditation for a few minutes to show gratitude to Surdas’s preachings on love, selflessness, and simplicity.
