Papmochani Ekadashi Significance

Papmochani Ekadashi is an auspicious day for the Hindu community. It is a time for reflection and asking for forgiveness for one’s wrongdoings. According to the ancient scriptures, fasting holds great importance in the Hindu religion. The ancient texts mention Lord Krishna explaining the significance of Vrat to King Yudhishtra in Bhavishyottara Purana. Also, those who observe fasts and stick to the ekadashi guidelines will attain a place in the kingdom of Lord Vishnu.

Moreover, the festival provides several benefits to the devotees of Lord Vishnu. Once they perform all their rituals and ceremonies, they tend to feel more at peace. They will also become stronger on emotional, intellectual, and spiritual levels as negativity will be eliminated, and feelings of guilt will fade away.

Papmochani Ekadashi Katha or Mythological Story

According to the Papmochani Ekadashi Katha, Medhavi, a devoted son of Rishi Chyavana, meditated in the Chaitratha forest. Lord Indra, the Apsaras, and Lord Kamdev tried to distract him, but he always remained focused. However, he eventually fell for the seductive Apsara, Manjughosa, who kept him trapped for 54 years, which left his years of meditation undone.

Moreover, after 54 years, she lost interest, and Medhavi, realising the loss of his spiritual power, cursed her to become the ugliest woman. He later apologised to his father, who advised him to perform Papmochani Ekadashi to make up for his sin. Manjughosa also followed the ritual and observed fast, and both were cleansed of their wrongdoings by Lord Vishnu’s grace.
