Narasimha Jayanti Significance

Narsingh is a Sanskrit word that combines the words ‘nar’, meaning man, and’ Singh’, meaning Lion. Lord Narsingh (half man-half animal) is the 4th avatar of Lord Vishnu, who appeared on earth to kill the asura Hiranyakashipu. On this day, his devotees worship him and seek his divine blessings.

Moreover, Narasimha Jayanti teaches us the victory of good over evil, divine protection, and strong devotion to the supreme. Those observing this Jayanti get peace, strength, protection from evil, and guidance to walk on the right path.

Narasimha Swamy Jayanthi: Story

There lived an asura named Hiranyakashipu. He was booned by Lord Brahma, not being killed by any man born on this earth, animal, weapon, nor during day nor at night and not even in his palace, land or sky. He started taking advantage of the boon and troubled the devs and humans.

Hiranyakashipu had a son named Prahlad, who, despite being born into a Rakshasa family, was a great worshipper of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu disliked Lord Vishnu and wanted to take revenge for killing his brother. Prahlad’s devotion fueled Hiranya’s anger, and he made several attempts to kill his son.

  • Hiranyakashipu Attempts To Kill Prahlad

Troubled by Prahlad’s devotion, Hiranya, with his sister Holika (blessed not to be burned by fire), decided to burn Prahlad by making him sit in the fire. But due to  Prahlad’s great devotion to Vishnu, he was saved, and Holika was burnt.

Hiranya, furious at Holika’s death, called Prahlad and asked him to show the power of his God. In anger, he struck the walls of his palace and decided to kill Prahlad.

  • Victory Of Good Over Evil

However, after a while, a fierce deity emerged from the pillar of the wall, a man with a lion’s face and claws. He was no other than Lord Vishnu, who appeared in Narsingh’s avatar.

As blessed by Brahama’s boon, Hiranya was led down on Narasimha’s lap and killed by his claws during twilight on the doorpost. In anger, he broke the neck of Hiranyakashipu, tore his stomach and wore his intestines as a garland, in extreme joy. This ended Brahma’s boon and freed Indralok from the asuras’ troubles.
