Once, a Brahmin girl lived with her parents, an elder brother and his wife. One day her parents decided to go to the Kashi Yatra but didn’t want to take their unmarried daughter on such a long journey. 

So, they decided to leave her with her brother and his wife. Many days passed, and there was no sign of the Brahmin and his wife. So, the girl’s greedy brother decided to marry her to a dead prince.

But to her will she was not shattered by this difficult situation too. Sitting next to the Brahmaputra River with the dead Prince, she suddenly remembered the Bheemana Amavasya Vrata, which her father and mother used to do.

Shiv-Shakti Vrata and its significance 

She quickly made mud lamps and prayed to remember Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. She stayed awake all night and prayed. When she was completely engrossed in her Tapp or meditation, she was woken up by an old couple who blessed her by saying, “Long live you and your husband. May you have a happy married life”.

Later when Prince woke up, she realised the couple was none other than the Gods themselves. It was Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati who gave her the blessings. Since that day this Amavasi Vrata is also known as Jyotirbheemeshawara Vrata. Married women keep this fast for almost nine years after their marriage. It is similar to “Sati Sanjeevani Vrata” in North India.

Deepastambha Pooja 

Bheemana Amavasya vrata pooja vidhi is simple so that everybody can do it. Firstly, the person who sits in the pooja makes the Kalikamba lamps which are simple mud lamps in an elongated shape. Then a yellow coloured thread (Kankana) is put around them. These lamps signify Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. 

Moreover, there is a tradition of making Thambittu or flour lamps. These are to eradicate all the negativity in our minds and hearts. So that we could pray with a clean heart, thus; this traditional Vrata is also has another name Deepastambha pooja or Vrata.

Rituals of Bheemana Amavasya Vrata

Kadubus, or dough balls, are made as an offering to the God and Goddess. Idlis, Kozhakattai, modaks and wheat balls are also prepared, which are later smashed by the young boys or other males of the House. Fasting females should not eat anything fried after the Pooja. Instead, they should include simple fruits, milk and water (things Lord Shiva would find fascinating) in their upvas thali.

Significance of Bheemana Amavasi Vrata

Married or unmarried ladies or girls keep this fast for the longevity and prosperity of the husband, father, brother, son, and other males in the House. Married women must keep this vrata for a minimum of 9 years after marriage. However, unmarried women keep it to get a good and beautiful husband. 

On the same day, many women keep fast for their brothers, calling it “Bandara”, similar to Raksha Bandhan in North India. It is a fast for the longevity and good health of brothers by sisters. In return, brothers always give their sisters gifts and blessings to protect them.
