Ram Navami is a festival marking the birth of Lord Rama of Ayodhya. It is on Chaitra month’s 9th day (the first month in the Hindu lunar calendar). It celebrates the completion of the spring festival of (Chaitra Navratri), which begins on Ugadi.

God Ram is a manifestation of the god Vishnu. His reign (the “Rama Rajya”) in Ayodhya brought great prosperity and fortune. Therefore, the holiday is of great significance even in Nepal and Hindus worldwide.

Ram Navami is an important day observed by the Hindus, primarily the followers of Vishnu. In 2022, Ram Navami falls on 10th April. Hence, elaborate preparation and enthusiasm are visible among people already.

The rituals of Ram Navami include recitations from ‘Ramayana’ or Tulsidas’s ‘Ramacharitmanas‘, lengthy performances of bhajans and kirtans and holy puja and arti. The bhajans are uplifting and praise the virtues of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman. In addition, many devotees of Hanuman and Ram recite ‘Sunderkand’ that strengthen qualities of bravery and loyalty.

God Ram was the seventh incarnation of Vishnu. And the hero of the Ramayana, the ancient Sanskrit epic. A constant recital during the month of Chaitra before the celebration is unforgettable. 

Houses are kept clean for Rama Navami, and adoring family shrines with small Rama statues occurs. Flowers and fruit are offered on the shrine, and prayers after an early bath are some rituals. Devotees fast or restrict themselves to a special diet to honour the day. And won’t eat certain foods like garlic, onions and wheat products.

The celebrations at places associated with Sri Rama, such as Ayodhya and Rameswaram, attract thousands of devotees.

In some parts of India, the custom is tying an earthen pot full of money on a tree. Then, local youths form groups to try and proclaim the pot.

It isn’t as effortless as it sounds. As soft mud surrounds the tree base, the teams try to get to the top of the tree by forming human pyramids. Then, the spectators shoot water jets at the pyramids to make it more fun and challenging.

The ceremony is similar to ‘vutti’, occurring during Janmashtami.

Celebrations Ram Navami in 2022: 

In Lord Rama’s holy birthplace, Ayodhya observes a vast gathering of devotees to take a holy dip in river Saryu. People pray wholeheartedly to earn God’s blessings. The two-day fair is most awaited that includes ‘rath yatras’, a ceremonious parade that includes taking the deities of Ram, Lakshman, wife Sita, and Mahavir Hanuman on chariots.

The busiest aspect of the celebration is the Ram Navami march. Four individuals dressed suitably pose as Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman. In addition, they do the rounds of the city in a ‘rath’ – a tradition that enthusiasts look forward to every year.

In South India, the festival lasts for nine days with several aspects of ceremony and rituals. Since the day overlaps with the marriage of Rama and Sita, the spirit on this day is highly rejoicing. The chantings, kirtans and recitals lend an inspiring and enlightening tone to the Ram Navami festival. In Andhra Pradesh, temples re-enact the wedding of Lord Rama and Sita on the final day of Ram Navami as theatres.
