Legend of Vaikasi Visakam

As we know that Lord Shiva created his child, Murugan, from the sparkles of his Chaitanya (third eye), let’s read the divine birth story of Lord Murugan!

Once, there lived a demon named Surapadman who wanted to rule the three worlds, which troubled the Gods. Thus, they went to seek help from Lord Shiva.

Listening to them, Lord Shiva created six sparks from his third eye, which landed in the river, Saravana Poigai. Maa Parvati turned those into a six-faced child and named him Murugan, which marked the celebrations of Vaikasi Visakam.

  • How Lord Murugan Defeated Surapadman?

Maa Parvati gave Lord Murugan a vel ( weapon used for killing) to defeat Surapadman, and named him Velan (the strong one). To restore balance in the universe, Lord Murugan fought with the Asura till the last.

Lord Velan was aware of Surapadman’s illusions and that he was residing in a tree to win over him. But, finally, Lord Murugan won the battle by splitting the tree with his vel.

Surapadman asked for forgiveness from Lord Murugan and transformed the tree parts into a rooster and a peacock. Forgiving him, Lord Murugan used the peacock as his vehicle and the rooster as his banner.

After this battle, Lord Murugan got the name Karunai Kadale, which means the ocean of kindness. And thus, this story shows Lord Murugan’s gentle nature to us.
