In Hinduism, there are almost more than 49 Gotra. However, people usually follow these seven major types of Gotras. 

1. Atri: The lineage of Atri Gotra is connected to Sage Atri, one of the Saptarishi. In Hindu mythology, he is considered to be one of the mind-born sons (Manasputras) of Brahma, the creator. However, people with Atri gotra should avoid the same gotra marriage as they have to face challenging consequences. 

2. Bharadvaja: The Bharadvaja Gotra is descended from Sage Bharadvaja, the other major Saptarishi. He is also considered a Manasputra of Brahma and is known for his deep knowledge of the Vedas. 

3. Gautama Maharishi: The Gautama Gotra is named after Sage Gautama Maharishi, a well-known figure among the Saptarishi. Gautama Maharishi’s teachings highlight truth through logical reasoning and righteousness. 

4. Jamadagni: The origin of Jamadagni Gotra came from the Sage Jamadagni, the father of the famous warrior-sage Parashurama, an avatar of Vishnu. This Gotra reflects its warrior spirit combined with spiritual faith and devotion. 

5. Kashyapa: The Kashyapa Gotra is a popular Gotra named after Sage Kashyapa. Kashyapa was the father of multiple Devas (gods), Asuras (demons), Nagas (serpents), and humans. He married Daksha’s thirteen daughters and had many children with them. 

6. Vasishta: The Vasishta Gotra originates from Sage Vasishta, one of the famous Saptarishi saints. Vasishta was the guru of the Ikshvaku dynasty, which even included Lord Rama. He is known for his deep knowledge of the Vedas, spiritual wisdom, and ability to perform strong rituals.

7. Vishvamitra: The Vishvamitra Gotra was named after Sage Vishvamitra, a king who turned himself into a sage. He is known for his strict restrictions and is recognised for composing the Gayatri Mantra. His journey from a warrior king to Brahmarishi shows his incredible determination and excellent spiritual growth.
