Mythological Story Behind the Celebration of Parsva Ekadashi

The story of Parsva Ekadashi revolves around the demon king Bali and Lord Vishnu’s Vamana avatar. King Bali, a powerful and righteous ruler, gained immense strength and control over the three worlds through true devotion to Lord Vishnu. Despite his generosity and fairness, his growing power threatened the gods as he had replaced King Indra.

As a result, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, to help all the dieties. King Bali was performing a havan when Vamana approached and requested three-half of the land. Bali, known for his unselfishness, agreed. Suddenly, Vamana grew into a giant form, covering the entire earth with one step, the heavens with the second, and leaving no space for the third.

King Bali realised it was no other common man but Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana. Bali offered his head for the third step. Vamana placed his foot on Bali’s head, pushing him to the Patal lok. However, impressed by Bali’s devotion, Vishnu allowed him to visit his kingdom every year.

Reason Behind Name of Parsva Ekadashi

Parsva Ekadashi is named after the word “Parsva,” which means “side” or “turn” in Sanskrit. This festival occurs during the Chaturmas period, a four-month sacred period in Hinduism when Lord Vishnu goes to sleep.
