Mata Sati was an embodiment of Devi Parvati. She immersed herself in a yagna fire which made Lord Shiva angry and distressed. So, Lord Shiva picked up the body of Mata Sati and started his tandava. His immense anger led to destroying everything that came in his path. 

Then, all the deities went to Lord Vishnu and asked for his help. Lord Vishnu found no solution but to use his sacred chakra and cut the body of Mata Sati into 51 pieces. All of the 51 pieces fell on Earth. The places where each piece fell became a holy places and are worshipped to date.
