What is Magha Purnima?

With Major significance in astrology and Hindu traditions, Magha Purnima 2025 is a special festival celebrated for Lord Vishnu and Hanuman Ji. On this day, deities invoke the names of Gods and Goddesses and engage in acts of charity. Moreover, taking baths in holy waters on this day is believed to lead to unbound abundance and prosperity.

According to popular stories and legends, Magha or Maghi Purnima is celebrated when the deities come down on Earth to enjoy some time at the bank of the Ganges. Thus, the famous Magha Mela and Kumbh Mela are organised to commemorate this unique occasion, where devotees gather at the bank of the Ganges to take the auspicious bath in the holy river.

What is the Story Behind Magha Purnima?

The story of Magha Purnima includes Dhaneshwar, a poor Brahmin. Dhaneshwar and his wife had no kids and were worried for their future. One day, Dhaneshwar’s wife went to the city searching for alms. There, she was asked to pray to Maa Kali to get blessed with children. The couple prayed to Kaali Maa for 16 days. On the 16th day, they received a boon that they would give birth to a beautiful baby.

However, they should light a lamp on every full moon day and keep adding a lamp on every subsequent full moon day until there are 32 lamps. Eventually, Dhaneshwar’s wife gave birth to a baby boy, and the couple named him Devdas.

Devdas & Magha Purnima Fast

While this story ends here, the other part talks about Devdas’s death and how he was about to be taken by Yamraj in the form of Kaal. However, Yamraj couldn’t do anything to Devdas since he and his wife had kept the Magha Purnima fast.
