According to Hindu mythology, a great demon named Tarakasura became invincible due to a boon granted by Lord Brahma. However, he terrorised the world and threatened the gods. To defeat Tarakasura, the gods decided to create a mighty warrior who would be the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Skanda, their son, fought against Tarakasura and killed him, thus freeing the world from his tyranny. Goddess Skandamata is the mother of Lord Skanda, and she is depicted holding him in her lap. She is also shown with four arms, carrying a lotus flower and a bell in two of her hands.

In addition, she has a trishul (Trident) and a weapon in her other two hands. The lotus flower symbolises purity and enlightenment, while the bell represents the sound of creation. The Trident symbolises Lord Shiva, and the weapon signifies the power to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies. 5th Day Navratri: Rituals, Daan and Mantras

The fifth day of Navratri, also known as Panchami, is a momentous day for worshipping the Goddess Skandamata. Therefore, devotees consider this day to be auspicious. People perform various rituals and customs to honour the Goddess and seek her blessings.

• Decorating the temple: The day begins with devotees waking up early in the morning and taking a bath. They then dress in new clothes and visit the temple to pray to Skandamata. • Perform the puja: One of the significant rituals of this day is the ‘Panchopchar Puja,’ where devotees offer five elements to the Goddess. These elements include flowers, incense sticks, a lamp, water, and food. Then, the priest performs the puja, and the devotees offer their prayers and seek the blessings of the Goddess.

• Bhog: Another important custom is the ‘Navratri day 5 bhog’ or the food offering to the Goddess. People prepare delicacies, such as kheer, puri, and sabzi, and offer them to the Goddess. Later, they distribute the food among the devotees as prasad.
• Worship Navratri Day 5 Goddess: In some regions of India, People celebrate Chaitra Navratri day 5 as ‘Lalita Panchami’. So, on this day, people worship the Goddess Lalita, who is the manifestation of divine feminine energy. The devotees offer the goddess flowers, fruits, and other offerings and seek her blessings for peace, prosperity, and happiness.
• Observe fast: Apart from these customs, people also observe fasts and perform meditation to seek the blessings of the Goddess Skandamata.  Fasting on this day purifies the mind and body and brings good luck and fortune to the devotees.
