The protector and preserver of the universe- Lord Vishnu, is the God of gods. He restores the balance of this universe by helping the troubled and maintaining an equilibrium between good and evil. In the world, he looks after things falling in the right order. Lord Vishnu appears in various forms and incarnations. He has been reincarnated a total of nine times. Who was Parashurama? 

The most aggressive incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parshurama, was the son of Renuka and Jamadagni. And he was born on the 3rd day of Shukla Paksha of Vaisakh (the Hindu month). He is the warrior form of Lord Vishnu and is said to be immortal. Legend says that he ascended on Earth to remove and eradicate destructive monarchs. There have been tales and folklores about his origin and existence, but “Who was Parashuram?”, let’s have a deeper look.

The LEGEND: Parshuram Story

Known to be the warrior and saviour of people, Lord Parshuram has a couple of tales to his name. Once, when Vana Parva, Kartavirya Arjuna, who was a legendary king of the Haihayas Kingdom of Madhya Pradesh, had put his head in the clouds and became pompous by trying to abuse his power. Moreover, he started misusing his authority and maltreated people. On visiting the hermitage of Jamadagni, Renuka welcomed him warmly and respectably. However, being his malicious self, he killed Jamadagni and Kama Dhenu (their sacred cow ).

In wrath and seeking revenge, Lord Parshuram killed the tyrant king and later vowed to kill all of the Kshatriyas on Earth. When the other Kshatriyas got to know about this, they immediately fled away. Therefore, to save things, Kashyap Muni asked Parshuram to calm down and told him to leave the world. Thus, Parshuram started residing on Mahendra ( the mountain).

Excellent at his skills, intelligent and aggressive at the same time, Parshuram had vowed to kill every Kshatriya existing on the planet, and he did so. As a consequence of this, all the other Brahmins were full of rage and shunned him. Moreover, all such stories and facts about him are etched in Hindu mythology. Here are some facts.

Lord Shiva’s Devotee

Parshuram was Lord Shiva’s devotee, and Lord Shiva gave him the “Parshu”, or an axe-like weapon, as a boon. Moreover, Shiva also taught him the entire warfare and the spirit of being a warrior. And his name is derived from the words parashu (axe) and Rama. Thus, the word means Ram with an axe. 

Chiranjeevi

Immortality is said and spoken about a lot in Hindu mythology. Chiranjeevi is a Sanskrit word meaning a long-lived person. And this word defines immortality. Parshuram has lived across Yugas and will remain alive through Kali Yuga and the next Satya Yuga.
