Significance of Vaishakha Purnima Vrat

  • Devotees who observe the Vrat fast from sunrise to moonrise. The vrat usually begins with a bath in a holy river and ends after sighting the Moon. The ceremonial bathing has a profound meaning. It symbolises the process of purification of the body as well as the mind. 
  • By bathing in the sacred waters, people can seek Moksha from the vicious cycle of birth, life and death.
  • Holy places such as Kashi (Varanasi) and the Triveni Sangam (confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati, in Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh and Haridwar (in Uttarakhand) witness an ocean of humanity during the Purnima day.
  • Besides taking a bath in the sacred rivers, the Purnima Tithi is also considered ideal for performing Satyanarayan Puja or the Puja of the Ishta Devta.

  • The Vaishakha Purnima Tithi is also significant for Buddhists. Siddhartha Gautama (popularly known as Gautam Buddha), the founder of the Buddhist faith, was born. This year, the 2583rd birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha shall be observed. 
  • By observing a vrat on this day, a devotee can pray for a blissful, hurdle-free and prosperous life.
  • It is also a perfect day for making donations to charity and feeding the poor.

Vaishakha Purnima Vrat Rituals

Fasting and performing virtuous deeds on this Purnima offers auspicious results. Like other Purnima fasts, the rituals for Vaishakha Purnima Vrat is also same, though with few additional rituals which are as follows:

  • On this day, take a bath in a sacred river, reservoir, well or Bawadi before sunrise. After that, offer Argh to the Sun God while chanting Surya Mantra.Vaishakha Purnima
  • Take vow for the fast and worship Lord Vishnu.
  • By donating water filled vessel and food in the name of Dharmaraj (Yamraj), offer results equivalent to Godan (Cow donation).
  • By donating sesame seeds along with sugar to five or seven needy persons, all sins of a person ends.
  • Light sesame oil lamps and offer sesame seeds as well.
  • Have food only one time on this day.
