Utpanna or Utpatti Ekadashi is the 11th day of the waning phase of the Krishna Paksha in November or December (Margashirsha). According to Hindu Mythology, a demon named Mura lived long ago. He was a general of the Narakasura army. His violence scared the demigods. He was the one who threw Lord Indra out of this throne. Indra went to Lord Shiva and asked for his help. Shiva took him to Lord Vishnu. For many years, the Supreme Lord fought with the demon.

Vishnu went to a cave to rest. There, he fell asleep. Mura conspired to kill Vishnu inside the cave. The Demon was not aware of his last day. Ekadashi, a beautiful lady, appeared before him. She saved Lord Palanhaar from the dreadful evil. She pleased Vishnu with her powers. He asked the Goddess for desired rewards for killing the demon. To this, Ekadashi asked for three boons.
