Utpanna Ekadashi 2025: Mythological Story

According to the story of the Utpanna Ekadashi, a demon named Mura lived long ago. He was a chief general in Narakasura’s army and even threw Lord Indra out of his throne. Lord Indra asked Lord Vishnu for help and asked him to bring peace back to the heavens.

So, one day, Lord Vishnu needed rest, so he entered a cave and fell into a deep sleep. Mura planned to attack and kill Lord Vishnu, but he met an unexpected visitor—Maa Ekadashi. She saved Lord Vishnu with her divine powers and killed the demon Mura.

Thankful for her bravery, Lord Vishnu asked Maa Ekadashi to ask for the reward. She wisely requested three boons. Let us explore what the three boons were.

Three Boons of Goddess Ekadashi

Below are the three boons that Maa Ekadashi asked for from Lord Vishnu in return for saving him from the mighty demon, Mura:

  • The first boon was that Lord Vishnu would always love her, and she would be his first choice.
  • The second boon was to hold great significance on certain days (tithis) so devotees could get rid of their sins.
  • Devotees who fast on the days dedicated to Maa Ekadashi will be granted good health and prosperity.

Utpanna Ekadashi Significance
