Somvati Amavasya Katha and Story

There lived an old Brahmin man who could not get his daughter married despite his daughter being a kind and beautiful young girl. So, once, a sage visited the Brahamin, pleased by his worship. The sage told him that his daughter has a negative dosha which is coming in the way of her marriage. Hearing this, the old man asked for a solution. The sage suggested the Brahmin’s daughter serve the lady, a washerwoman named Sona.

Agreeing with the words of Sage, the girl used to wake up early in the morning while everyone was asleep and sneak into Sona’s house and do all the household chores as suggested by the sage. Furthermore, while Sona and her daughter-in-law used to wake up, all the household chores were already done. They got confused and tried to investigate about this matter. One day, they discovered the girl and asked her why she was doing all the household chores.

The girl explained her problems to Sona, who was pleased by the girl’s dedication and rewarded her by applying vermillion on her forehead. As soon as Sona does this, her injured husband dies. Leaving the girl and her daughter-in-law at home, she went to look for a peepal tree but had nothing to offer. However, she picked up a brick and took 108 rounds around the peepal tree, praying for her husband. Lord Shiva and Vishnu, delighted by the devotees, bring Sona’s husband back to life as a blessing for her immense devotion.
