About Rahu
The most malevolent of the planets is considered worse than even the Hard To Appease, Lord Saturn or Shani Dev. Known as the ‘North Lunar Node(ascending)’ in English, the planet of profound mysteries and secrets, Rahu has the most interesting mythological story associated with it.
The fable dates back to the time of ‘Samudra Manthan’ during the distribution of the ‘Amrit’(life-giving nectar). Lord Vishnu emerged as the Divine Physician, Dhanvantari (also worshipped on Dhanteras for good health), with the pot of Amrit in his hand. Looking at the tense situation between the Devata (Gods) and Asura (Demon) army, it was decided that the Amrit would be distributed by turn. Both sides are in 2 lines respectively, and Lord Vishnu changes his form to the seductress Mohini and starts the distribution of Amrit to the two parties turn by turn, with beautiful dancing moves.
The Asuras were so distracted by the movement that they didn’t notice Mohini replacing the nectar with another liquid. This, however, was noticed by one particularly smart demon named Svarbhanu. He stole from the eyes of the rest of the populace and sneaked in the line of devatas. The demon quietly slipped in between the Sun and Moon to drink a little bit of the nectar.
When Lord Vishnu saw Svarbhanu drinking from the nectar, he quickly threw his Sudarshan Chakra towards him, cutting his head off, but by then, the damage was done. Even though the head and body were separated, Svarbhanu was still alive. At this time, Lord Brahma came to the rescue. He joined the immortal demon’s head to the body of a snake, and he came to be known as Rahu. Consequently, the body was joined to the head of the snake and was named Ketu.
Svarbhanu took this form with grace, which pleased Brahma, and the latter gave him the boon that Rahu and Ketu shall have a respected place in the Hindu Astrological/Planetary System. Because the Sun God and Moon God were the ones who pointed out Rahu/Ketu’s fault, the planets hold a grudge against them.
