What is the Teej Festival?

Hariyali Teej is a special festival that women in India celebrate during the monsoon season. It’s a time when nature turns green. Therefore, women come together to pray for the happiness and well-being of their husbands. They dress in beautiful clothes, put Henna on their hands, and enjoy swinging on colourful swings

Teej is a significant festival for many Hindu women across the country. It is a festival that represents the eternal bond of marriage. Both married as well as unmarried women celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm. Most North Indian states celebrate this auspicious festival.

Haryaali Teej comes during the month of Shravan or monsoons. It falls on the Tritiya or third day of Shukla Paksha of this month. On this festival, we celebrate the union of Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati. In Hinduism, they possess the qualities of an ideal couple. Therefore, people pray to them for a prosperous marriage.

On Haryaali Teej, women observe a fast from sunrise to sunset. They also worship idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Additionally, women offer flowers, fruits, and sweets and perform traditional dance and music. Swing decorations and mehndi (Henna) application are also important parts of the celebrations.

Why Teej is Celebrated

Hariyali Teej marks the arrival of the monsoon season. Many states of India suffer from extreme heat. Therefore, this season brings relief to people. It is a time to celebrate the refreshing rains, blooming flowers, and the rejuvenation of nature. The greenery and nature give this festival the name Hariyali Teej.

Hariyali Teej: Special Significance For Married Women

Hariyali Teej is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati did intense penance and fasting to win over Lord Shiva as her husband. Therefore, people believe that fasting and performing rituals on this day pleases the divine couple and ensures a happy married life.

The festival holds special significance for married women. This is because this festival celebrates the divine bond of marriage. Married women do this for the longevity of their marriage as well as the good health and life of their husbands. At the same time, unmarried women keep this fast to pray for a husband who has the qualities of Lord Shiva.

Teej Celebration Rituals

This is a time for women of all age groups to come together and celebrate their rich cultural traditions. Teej celebration has many rituals which you can perform. By doing these sacred acts, you can gain the blessings of the divine couple, lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

1. Teej Puja

On this day, women wake up early and start preparing for Teej Puja. They begin cleaning their homes in advance and put up torans at the entrance of their houses to welcome the divine blessings.
Then, they made clay idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and their son, Lord Ganesha. If you cannot make idols yourselves, you can pray to these gods’ photos and buy their idols.

Furthermore, women prepare offerings made out of ingredients dear to these gods. Kheer and Panchamrit are two very famous offerings that women prepare. They offer them to the gods during Teej Puja and then distribute them amongst their families.

2. Hariyali Teej vrat

Haryaali Teej vrat is one of the most important rituals of teej celebration. Hindu women across India keep this vrat to pray for a happy as well as harmonious married life. It is a symbol of their dedication and infinite love towards their spouses.

Unmarried women also keep the Hariyaali Teej vrat to pray for a good husband. They pray for their husbands to have qualities like Lord Shiva. Most women do not eat anything or consume water during this fast. People believe that keeping this fast ensures the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

3. Solah Shringar

Hariyali Teej 2024 is the perfect time to gather and celebrate womanhood. Solah Shringar is a ritual every woman looks forward to. On the day of Teej, women dress up in green or red sarees to celebrate this festival. These colours represent a married woman or a fulfilling marriage.

Women also prepare a plate of Solah Shringar ingredients and offer it to Goddess Parvati. This plate includes samagri like bangles, Sindur, Alta, bindi, and red chunni, as well as Kajal and mehendi.

4. Mehndi for Teej

Mehendi or Henna holds a lot of importance in Hindu culture. On almost every auspicious occasion, people apply mehendi on their hands. This enhances the celebration and brings auspicious energy to any event.

Teej celebration cannot be complete without applying Mehndi for Teej. People believe that the colour of the mehendi represents the depth of your relationship. Therefore, the darker the mehendi, the deeper the love would be.

Hariyali Teej 2024 Vrat Katha

Women gather on this day to listen to or read the Vrat Katha, which is the story behind why we keep the Haryaali Teej Vrat. Listening to this Katha can have immense benefits and make your understanding of this festival even more meaningful.

According to Hindu Mythology, Goddess Parvati performed various extreme rituals to marry Lord Shiva for 107 years. She took multiple births during this period of time. However, it was in her 108th life when she finally married the one she had sought all this time.

According to the legend, Goddess Parvati was born as the daughter of the king of the Mountains in her 108th life. When she reached the age of marriage, Parvatraj started finding a groom for her. He thought of getting her married to Lord Vishnu.

However, goddess Parvati had already accepted lord shiva as her husband in her heart. Therefore, she asked her friend to hide her in a dense forest to avoid marrying lord Vishnu. In the forest, she kept a waterless fast in extreme weather conditions.

Her devotion to Lord Shiva made him accept her as his wife. Therefore, this day is a reminder of the divine union and marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Her penance inspired many ladies to follow in her footsteps to pray for a husband like lord Shiva.

Happy Hariyali Teej!
