There are many tales we associate with the Chaitra Navratri festival. Let us go through a few of them. According to Brahma Purana, this is the Day of Chaitra Pratipada when Lord Brahma started making the universe under the command of Goddess Durga. Hence, according to the Hindu calendar, this day is considered the first day of the year. It is also believed that the Matsya avatar of Lord Vishnu was incarnated on the third day of Chaitra Navratri to establish Mother Earth. Chaitra Navratri’s 9th day, known as ‘Navami’ or ‘Ram Navami’, honours the birth of Lord Rama, who is one of the great avatars of Lord Vishnu.

According to another legend, Goddess Parvati once desired to pay a visit to her parents for nine days. So she took permission for the same from Lord Shiva and started the voyage to her parent’s house. During this period, She took the form of goddess Durga and exterminated the demon called ‘Mahishasura’.
