Chaitra Navratri Day 2: Brahmacharini Mata story
According to Hindu mythology, Mata Brahmacharini is the second form of Goddess Durga and is also known as Tapasyacharini or Aparna. “Brahmacharini” means “one who does not marry and devotes themselves to religious beliefs.”
Sati was reborn as Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas. She searched high and low for Lord Shiva. During that period, she pledged to survive on only fruits and water. Later, she stopped taking them, too. She was determined to win Lord Shiva’s heart again and decided to undertake severe penance to attain him as her husband. She renounced all worldly pleasures and meditated for many years as Mata Brahmacharini.
Mata Brahmacharini’s tapasya was very severe. Thus, she also goes by “Uma” or “Aparna,” which means “one who eats very little.” She did this to purify her mind, body, and soul and attain spiritual enlightenment. Her devotion and determination impressed Lord Shiva, who finally granted her the wish to be his wife. Mata Brahmacharini then married Lord Shiva and became Parvati once again.
