Bathukamma 2025, the ‘festival of flowers’, is a significant ritual in Telangana and some parts of Andhra Pradesh. Starting from September 21st, it is a time when women and girls celebrate nature, life, and the Goddess Gauri.

What is Bathukamma Festival? 

Bathukamma meaning “Mother Goddess Come Alive” in Telugu, combines “Bathuku” (life) and “Amma” (mother). This festival is all about honouring Goddess Gauri, who is a form of Goddess Parvati and is the giver of life. It is a nine-day festival that occurs during the Navratri period.

The main part of the festival is a beautiful flower arrangement that women and girls make. They collect different types of local flowers and pile them up in a conical shape, like a temple tower (gopuram). This flower stack is called “Bathukamma.”

When is Bathukamma Celebrated? 

Bathukamma 2025 dates are from September 22, 2025, to September 30, 2025. It starts on the day of Mahalaya (Bhadrapada) Amavasya and ends on Durgashtami, which is two days before Dussehra.

• Agriculture & Nature: The festival of Bathukamma celebrates the agricultural prosperity and shows respect for nature, especially in South Indian tradition.

• Beginning of Sharath Ruthu: The nine days of Bathukamma also celebrate the start of the monsoon season (Sharath Ruthu). 

• For Prosperity and Abundance: Married women pray for prosperity, good fortune and healthy families during Bathukamma.

What are the Nine Days of Bathukamma Festival?

During the nine days of Bathukamma, a special food is offered to the Goddess Gauri known as Naivedyam. So, here is the list of the Bathukamma 2025 nine days names: 

1. Engili Puvvula Bathukamma (Bathukamma 1st day) 

Naivedyam (Food Offering): Simple rice flour and sesame seeds.

2. Atkula Bathukamma (Bathukamma 2nd day) 

Naivedyam (Food Offering): A mix of poha, jaggery, and boiled lentils

3. Mundapappu Bathukamma (Bathukamma 3rd day) 

Naivedyam (Food Offering): A mix of boiled lentils, milk, and jaggery. 

4. Atla Bathukamma (Bathukamma 4th day) 

Naivedyam (Food Offering): Food offering of dosas or wheat pancakes.

5. Aligina Bathukamma (Bathukamma 5th day) 

Naivedyam (Food Offering): No food offering.

6. Vrpakayala Bathukamma (Bathukamma 6th day) 

Naivedyam (Food Offering): Deep-fried rice flour cakes shaped like neem fruits. 

7. Vennamuddula Bathukamma (Bathukamma 7th day) 

Naivedyam (Food Offering): A mix of sesame seeds, butter or ghee, and jaggery. 

8. Saddula Bathukamma (Pedda Bathukamma)

Naivedyam (Food Offering):  Five types of rice (curd rice, lemon rice, tamarind rice, sesame rice and coconut rice). 

Bathukamma 2025 Rituals: How is Bathukamma Celebrated?

The significance of the Bathukamma festival can be understood by looking at its rituals, which convey different meanings. Below is the step-by-step Bathukamma 2025 rituals celebration guide: 

1. Morning Preparations

The Bathukamma celebrations begin with morning preparations, during which local flowers such as Thangedu, Gunugu, Bathi, and Lotus leaves are collected, washed, and dried properly for the after rituals. 

2. Making of Bathukamma 

Women and girls gather flowers and arrange them in a circular pattern on a wide plate,”tambalam.” Then, they place the flower stack, which resembles a temple, and at the very top of a small turmeric idol of Goddess Gauri. 

3. Evening Puja 

In the evenings, women dress up in traditional attire, Langa Voni. They gather in circles around their Bathukammas and sing folk songs. One of the famous songs sung in Bathukamma celebrations is Bathukamma patalu.

4. Naivedyam 

Each day of the Bathukamma festival, women offer the special dish and share the prasadam with their family and neighbours. 

5. Visarjan (Immersion of Bathukamma) 

On the last day, women carry their Bathukammas on their heads to a nearby water body (Bathukamma Kunta) and slowly immerse them in the water. They pray together and share turmeric paste from the Gowri Amma idol, and apply it to their Mangala Sutra for marital bliss and long lives for their husbands.

What is the Real Story of Bathukamma? 

Bathukamma’s history traces its roots back approximately one thousand years, specifically during the Chola dynasty. King Dharmanganda, the ruler of the Chola Dynasty, and his wife, Satyavati, lost their hundred sons in a war. 

Both the king and his queen worshipped Goddess Lakshmi and asked for her blessings. Luckily, Goddess Lakshmi answered their prayers and blessed the couple with a beautiful baby girl whom they later named ‘Bathukamma’, which means the one who lives forever.
