• The powerful Asura King Surapadman and his brothers terrorised the universe after receiving a non-defeatable boon from Lord Shiva. They drove the Devas (lords) away from heaven.

• To destroy the Asuras (demons), Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati created their son, Lord Murugan (Kartikeya or Skanda). He was born with six faces (Arumugan) to absorb the knowledge of the six directions.

• Next, Goddess Parvati gifted Murugan the sacred Vel (spear), which represents supreme wisdom (Gnana Shakti), to lead the army of Devas.

• Lord Murugan took a fierce six-day war against the Asuras, fulfilling the purpose of his birth. The final defeat, known as Soorasamharam, occurred on the sixth day—the day of Kanda Sashti.

• When defeated, Surapadman attempted to escape the Vel by transforming into a massive mango tree in the ocean.

• Lord Murugan, using his divine Vel, split the tree into two pieces. Instead of destroying him, Lord Murugan transformed the two halves of the demon into eternal devotees.

• One half became the Peacock (Vahana or mount). And the other half became the Rooster (Seval on his battle flag).
