What is Ram Navami?

Lord Ram is considered the Maryada Purushottam. Ram Navami is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ram. We celebrate this festival in the Hindu month of Chaitra.

This occurs on the ninth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase), Chaitra Navaratri, when we believe Goddess Durga comes to the earth for nine days. Rama Navaratri marks the end of Chaitra Navaratri.

Also, on this day, people celebrate Lord Ram’s marriage to Goddess Sita, known as Kalyanotsav, which means a divine wedding.

The Divine Story Behind Ram Navami Celebrations

The King Dasharatha of Ayodha married three times but was not fortunate enough to have a child. Saint Vashistha, a popular sage and one of the Saptarishis, advised Dasharatha to perform a Yajna to get a child.

The Sacred Yajna

In the Yajna, King Dasharatha’s three wives, Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra, were told to be present. Following the Yajna rituals, the Sage Vashishtha gave Dasharatha a bowl of Kheer and told him to distribute it to his three wives.

The three wives gave birth to four sons on the ninth day of the Chaitra month. The first wife, Kaushalya, gave birth to Rama; Kaikeyi, to Bharata; and the third wife, Sumitra, to Lakshmana and Shatrughna.

Dasharatha fulfilled his wish for children through this holy yajnYajnaso, and the people of Ayodhya thanked God for this divine miracle. Devotees listen to this story every year on Ram Navami, also known as Ram Katha.
