What is Karana in Astrology?

The word “Karana” is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “to act” or “to do”. Karanas are important for understanding the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of different times in the Hindu calendar, known as the Panchang. Moreover, in simple words, Karana is half of Tithi (lunar day) because the lunar month has 30 tithis, and therefore, the number of Karanam in a lunar month would be 60 as each lunar day has 2 karans.

Moreover, Karana in astrology is a duration of time in which the position of the Moon and Sun determines the Karana for a particular day. The Moon shifts from one Karana to another approximately every half day. However, that’s when the distance between the Moon and the Sun increases by 6 degrees.
