In ancient times, there was a moneylender. His mother, Lakshmi, who had two daughters, was very religious and a great believer of Goddess Lakshmi. Both the daughters fasted on the full moon.

The eldest daughter of the moneylender fulfilled this vow and performed the complete rituals. However, his younger daughter ignorantly left the fast incomplete. Goddess Lakshmi became angry with her for leaving the fast incomplete.

The children of the moneylender’s younger daughter used to die. Whenever she gave birth to a child, her son died soon after. The moneylender’s younger daughter was very upset and told a sage about her trouble.

Rishi understood the whole matter and told her about the mistake in leaving the full moon fast incomplete and not observing the complete ritual. He told her that if she observed the Purnima fast correctly, her child could survive.

The Advice Of The Sage

On the advice of the sage, she observed the Purnina vow following the rituals. She had a child but died a few days later. This made her quite upset, but then she remembered her elder sister. She laid the boy on a small wooden bench and covered him with a cloth.

Then she called her elder sister and motioned for her to sit on her. The elder sister was unaware that the child’s body was lying there. As soon as she started sitting on the bench, her lehenga touched the baby, and the baby suddenly came alive and started crying.

The Sister’s Miracle

Seeing this incident, the elder sister reprimanded her and said, “You wanted to stigmatise me. If I sat down, it would have died. The younger sister politely said that it was already dead. It is by your penance and merit that it has come to life. You have the immense grace of Mata Lakshmi.

After this incident, the moneylender proclaimed that the city should observe the full moon fast. Since then, this day has been celebrated as a festival, and Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on this day.
