The word “Mauni” is derived from Sanskrit, which means “silence or absolute silence” while Amavasya means “No Moon day”. So, on the day of Mauni Amavasya, the devotees observe a Maun Vrat (a vow of silence) and holy bath in the Ganges to pray for long life and happiness.

Of all the 13 Amavasyas (No Moon days), the Mauni Amavasya falls in the middle of the Magha month as per the Hindu lunar calendar. Every year, Hindu devotees wait for this day to please Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and their ancestors. It is quite a popular activity during the Magha Mela.

• The Mauni Amavasya 2025 rituals start with purifying the mind, body, and soul. On the day, take a bath in the Brahma Muhurat (03:30 AM-6:00 AM). Add some drops of Ganagajal while bathing. 
• After the purification, offer water to Surya Dev(Lord Sun). While offering the water, you can chant some Lord Surya Mantra.
• Now comes the most important ritual of Mauni Amavasya: taking the vow of silence. But first, meditate by remembering Lord Hari, aka Lord Vishnu. 
• Next, the devotee has to keep silent and meditate to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva until the completion of the fast.
•  Finally, donate food, clothes and other essential items to the poor and needy to complete the Mauni Amavasya rituals.

Those who offer water to Lord Sun on the day of Mauni Amavasya get the blessings of Lord Sun and stay away from unnecessary problems. So, this remedy includes offering water to Surya Deva by mixing some black sesame seeds and red flowers in the water.

Last but not least, the remedy is to offer water to the Peepal tree. However, this remedy includes some important steps. Don’t forget to offer milk and 5 white sweets to Peepal Tree. After offering the sweets and water, this remedy talks about taking 108 parikramas(rounds) around the Peepal tree.
