What is Mahalaxmi Pooja
All of us must be familiar with the divine qualities of Goddess Laxmi. In Hinduism, Mahalaxmi or Goddess Laxmi represents wealth and abundance. Therefore, Mahalaxmi Pooja is a festival that celebrates the gracious qualities of Mahalaxmi.
Mahalaxmi Pooja goes on for sixteen days. Devotees throughout the country perform various rituals to gain Mahalaxmi’s blessings. This auspicious period begins in the Bhadrapad Month and ends in the Ashwin month. People start with the rituals on the Ashtmi, or the 8th day of the Shukla Paksh of Bhadra month.
However, the auspicious meaning of this day has not ended yet! People also celebrate it as the birth of Goddess Radha. This gives it the name Radha Ashtami. Furthermore, many worship the Durva plant on this day, hence calling it Durva Ashtami. Therefore, Mahalaxmi Pooja begins on this auspicious note.
Significance of the Mahalaxmi Festival in Hinduism
The main purpose of Mahalaxmi Pooja is to seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. She blesses us with health as well as prosperity. Mahalaxmi Pooja Rituals
Devotees show their love to the generous goddess in many ways during this time. Therefore, if you want to receive divine benefits, you can follow these rituals during the Mahalaxmi festival.
1. Mahalaxmi Pooja Preparation
To perform this auspicious ritual, people wake up early in the morning. This time is known as the Brahma Muhurat. Afterwards, they take a bath and begin with the preparations for Puja. Devotees prepare various sweets as well as food items to offer as prasad. People worship eight forms of Mahalaxmi.
Then, they make an idol of Mahalaxmi sitting on an elephant with clay. This form of Laxmi is known as Gajalaxmi. You can also bring an idol or a picture of Gajalaxmi. Then, they prepare a chowki for the goddess to sit on. Furthermore, people decorate this chowki with flowers, and then they place the idol on it.
2. Tying of Auspicious Mahalaxmi Sutra
To worship Mahalaxmi, people prepare the Mahalaxmi Sutra. This is a thread with sixteen knots. Afterwards, people worship it with Kumkum and sandalwood. Then, devotees tie this thread on their left wrists for sixteen days.
After sixteen days, they immerse it in any river or holy water. This holy thread gives them protection against any obstacles they may encounter. If you tie this thread on your left wrist, Mahalaxmi will watch over you as well as protect you from negativity.
3. Mahalaxmi vrat
Mahalaxmi vrat is the most significant ritual of this festival. It is a vrat, which people observe for sixteen days to show their devotion towards goddess Laxmi. People can keep various types of fasts during this auspicious period. They also listen to the Mahalakshmi Vrata Katha during this time.
If someone can not keep a vrat for all sixteen days, they can keep it for three days. These three days are the first, eighth and sixteenth days of this duration. Furthermore, the devotees keep the Mahalaxmi vrat every day from sunrise to sunset. People offer arghya to the sun when they wake up in the morning and begin with the fast.
4. Kalash Pujan
Another important ritual of the Mahalaxmi festival is the Kalash Pujan or Kalash sthapna. For this ritual, people prepare an altar to keep the kalash. They light diyas as well as incense sticks around the altar. Afterwards, they fill the Kalash with water and place some coins in it.
This water is usually water from sacred rivers like Ganga.
Then, they place a coconut on top of the Kalash. Furthermore, people draw four lines on the coconut with Kumkum. These four lines represent the qualities of Chaturvedas, a sacred Hindu text. Then they tie a red thread around the Kalash and draw a Swastik on it. Lastly, they cover the coconut with mango or betel leaves, decorate the Kalash with a red cloth and place it on Akshat.
5. Durva Pujan
Durva is a very special plant which holds a lot of religious significance in Hinduism. People use this plant on various religious as well as auspicious occasions. For Mahalakshmi Pooja, devotees tie sixteen blades of the Durva grass together.
Then, they dip it in sacred water, and afterwards, they sprinkle that water on themselves and their family members. They also sprinkle this water in various spots in their homes. This welcomes positivity in their homes as well as makes them pure.
