Ravana The Father Of Sita

What if we ask you what pops up in your mind when you hear the word ‘Ramayana’? Do you know how Sita and Ravana connected? Is Ravana Devi Sita’s father? Didn’t Ravana kidnap Sita out of lust and revenge for his sister Surpanaka? Let’s crack the mystery of whether is Sita daughter of Ravana or not!

Is Sita Daughter Of Ravana: What do Ramayan’s Different Versions say?

The Ramayana we saw on TV or heard in the form of stories from our grandparents is entirely based on the version written by the sage Valmiki. But this is not the only version of Ramayana that exists. In Ramayan, Goddess Sita is the wife of Lord Ram. Sita mother and father name are Janaka and Sunaina.

The Buddhist version, the Gond version, and the Thai version are some other versions of the Ramayana. Generally, we think that different versions of the Ramayana follow the same story where Ravana abducts Sita for revenge. But it’s not right, as different versions of Ramayana (Example: Gondi Ramayani) have excluded the story’s main antagonist, Ravana.

What Does Valmiki’s Version of Ramayana Say?

Are you curious to know whether is Sita daughter of Ravana or not? Well, let’s find out by reading Valmiki’s version of the Ramayana! The 66th chapter (sarga) of Baala Kanda mentions Sita’s origin.

Valmiki’s Ramayana mentions that Sita was not the biological daughter of King Janaka and Sunaina. Rather, she was the daughter of Bhumi Devi, born out of the earth’s womb. Later, she was found by King Janaka while he was ploughing in a field.

Ravana

Is Sita Daughter of Ravana: Sanghadasa’s Jain Version of Ramayana

Likewise, the other versions of Ramayana, here comes the version that entails the story of whether is Sita daughter of Ravana or not.

Ravan’s Connection With Vedavati

Ramayana’s Jain version mentions the story of Vedavati, who was originally Lord Brihaspati’s grandchild and Brahmarishi Kushadvaja’s daughter.

Ravana was fascinated by the beauty of Vedavati and wanted to have her. However, Vedavati’s intelligence did not let Ravana’s evil plan succeed.

The Curse of Vedavati

Before Ravana could do something, Vedavati immolated herself in the fire, cursing Ravana that she would be the reason for his demise in her next birth. As promised, Ravana and his wife, Mandodari, are blessed with a baby girl named Vasudevahindi (Vedavati’s resurrection).

But, scared of the curse of Vedavati, Ravana tried to get rid of the girl by drowning her in the ocean. Luckily, the baby girl was saved by the goddess Varuni (ocean), and later she gave the baby to the goddess Bhumi (land).

Ravana

Is Sita daughter of Ravana: Manivati’s version of the Uttar Purana

Uttar Purana reveals an entirely different story of whether is sita daughter of Ravana or not. Instead of Vedavati, Manivati became the reason for Ravana’s death.

Manivati’s Rebirth as Ravana’s Daughter

Just like in Vedavati’s version, Ravana tries to molest Manivati; here, too, Manivati falls prey to Ravana’s evil eye. In her next birth, instead of Vedavati, Manivati is born as the daughter of Ravana and Mandodari. Aware of the curse, Ravana orders to kill the baby girl.

Manivati’s Connection With King Janaka

How did King Janaka find Manivati? Then we must tell you that instead of killing the baby girl, Ravana’s servant buried her in the barren land near Mithila. Later, she was found by King Janaka while he was ploughing a field.

When it comes to the question of who was the real daughter of Ravana that became the reason for his death, here forms two schools of opinion. The first flock of people still believe that Vedavati’s version of the story is authentic, and the rest believe that Manivati is the child who killed Ravana.
