Jagaddhatri Puja 2025: Popular Mythologies

The significance behind the Jagaddhatri Puja lies in the sacred stories related to the goddess. So, let us now know why devotees look forward to this festival.

History And Origin Of Jagaddhatri Puja

The Jagadhatri Puja history takes us back to the 18th-century king Krishnachandra Raya, Krishnanagar in Nadia district, Bengal.

Maa Durga came in his dream during his stay in the British prison when he was upset about having missed the Durga Puja. In the dream, she told him to worship her as Jagaddhatri for peace and prosperity in his kingdom, a month later, on a Shukla Paksha.

The king followed her instructions, starting the tradition of Jagaddhatri Puja, which is still celebrated with great devotion today. Jagaddhatri Puja reminds us of the importance of humanity and the power of divine help in overcoming pride and evil.

The Birth of Maa Jagaddhatri

Jagaddhatri Puja has an interesting mythological story behind it. This story tells us how Maa Jagaddhatri was born and how she humbles the world.

1. After Goddess Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura, the devtas (gods) grew arrogant, believing that their power was responsible for the victory.

2. To humble them, Maa Durga appeared before the lords as Maa Parvat or Shakti. She placed a blade of grass before them and challenged them to destroy or move it.

3. Despite using all their might, the gods could not even budge the blade of grass. The gods realised that their powers were not their own but were derived from a supreme source – Shakti, the ultimate power behind all creation.

4. To reinforce this lesson, the goddess manifested as Jagaddhatri (“Holder of the World”) and hence, transformed the arrogance of the lords into an elephant. In this form, she appeared riding a lion with the elephant demon called Karindrasura, under the lion’s feet.

Conclusion

Jagaddhatri Puja is a popular festival in West Bengal that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month as per the Bengali Calendar. Dedicated to Maa Jagaddhatri, one of the various forms of Maa Durga, this Puja is practised to overcome bad thoughts and find peace. So, this year, one must attend Jagaddhatri Puja 2025, feel humble and destroy unnecessary pride and ego.
