What is Naag Panchami?

Nag Panchami is a festival where we offer worship to snakes. Other names of this festival include Garuda Panchami, Nagula Panchami, and Bhratu Panchami.

Falling on the Panchami tithi of the Shukla Paksha in Shravan, Naag Panchami is dedicated to the worship of 12 Naag Devtas. Moreover, seeing Naagdev on this day is said to bring wealth and protection to a person.

Nag Panchami 2025: Astrological Significance

Nag Panchami 2025 will bring two lucky yogasShiv Yoga (connecting with Lord Shiva to receive his blessings) and Siddh Yoga (the spiritual practice of self-realisation). These are highly auspicious to gain divine blessings.

Individuals with the Kaal Sarp dosha (as indicated in their birth chart) can mitigate its adverse effects by performing a puja on this day. Additionally, by observing fasts and offering boiled rice with milk, devotees can attract the divine blessings of the snake gods.

Nag Panchami 2025: Mythological Significance

There are two stories behind Naga Panchami. Let us understand them both in detail.

1. Vasuki & Samudra Manthan

During the Samudra Manthan, a poison called Halahala came out from the mouth of the serpent, Vasuki. Lord Shiva immediately consumed the poison, thereby protecting the universe from its effects.

However, a few drops of the poison fell on the ground, which were consumed by other serpents. Seeing them unable to control the poison’s effect, the Gods performed Ganga Abhishekam on Lord Shiva and also on the serpents to control the poison’s effect.

2. Lord Krishna and Kaliya Naag

Another story about Lord Krishna and Kaliya Nag tells about the significance of Nag Panchami. The snake Kaliya had polluted the Yamuna, releasing its poison.

Lord Krishna defeated the snake and cleansed the pure water of Yamuna from its deadly poison.  However, he later blessed Kaliya with a boon: whoever offers milk to snakes and prayers will be free of their sins.

Rituals of Nag Panchami 2025

On the auspicious occasion of Nag Panchami, people perform certain rituals to gain the blessings of the Lord. Let us understand these sacred celebrational practices of this festival.

1. Offering Milk & Belpatra Leaves To The Shivling

Lord Shiva is known as ‘Pashupatinath’, which means the Lord of animals. Thus, worshipping him on Nag Panchami can help one gain his blessings. To do so, you can visit the nearest Shiva temple.

Also, one can offer Belpatra (Bilva leaves), milk and curd on Shivling and chant “Om Namah Shivaya” 108 times. This helps minimise the effect of the Kaal Sarpa Dosha and removes obstacles and challenges from your life.

2. Offering Milk To Nag Devta

On Garuda Panchami, devotees must offer milk to Nag Devta with Belpatra. If you cannot find a snake, you can create a shape of a snake with clay and keep it under a banyan or peepal tree.

Moreover, you can worship the clay figure by decorating it with flowers, offering it raw milk and chanting ‘Om Nagdevatay Namah’. This ritual can help remove obstacles in one’s career and bring success.

3. Worshipping & Donating A Silver idol Of Nag & Naagin

If you are facing issues related to Kaal Sarp dosh, you can worship a silver idol of a nag and a nagin on this day. Afterwards, donate it to a Shiva temple or immerse it in a river.

Moreover, this ritual can help mitigate the negative effects of planetary influences and remove barriers that have hindered your professional success.  Moreover, this ritual can be beneficial for those who face financial problems.

4. Keeping A Nag Panchami Vrat

Vrats are a famous way of showing love and devotion to our beloved deities. On the Nagula Panchami festival, people observe a day-long fast to please the serpent Gods..

They do not eat for the entire day or only eat fruits. Afterwards, they break the fast by eating the prasad offered to the Naga gods.
