Vamana Jayanti, also known as Vamana Dwadashi, is one of the most important and significant festivals according to Hindu Mythology. This day is celebrated with utmost joy and happiness because, on this day, Lord Indra has restored his throne on Swarga Loka. On this day, devotees worship and seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu in the form of Lord Vamana because Lord Vamana is the 5th incarnation of Vishnu Bhagwan and his first incarnation as a human being. On this day, Lord Vishnu was born as Lord Vamana as a son to Sage Kashyapa and his beloved wife Aditi.
Moreover, Lord Vamana was born on the day of Abhijit Muhurat on the twelfth day in the month of Bhadrapada in Shukla Paksha. So, usually, this festival falls in the month of August or September. Also, the people of South India refer to Vamana Dev as Upendra. Furthermore, in the present year, 2023, the Vamana Jayanti date is on Tuesday, 26th September. Moreover, the Vamana Jayanti Puja vidhi, that is, Dwadashi tithi, begins at 5:00 AM on 26th September and will end at 1:45 AM on 27th September. Additionally, the Vamana Jayanti for the year 2024 will be celebrated on 15th September.
The story behind the celebration of Vamana Jayanti is associated with King Mahabali being defeated by Lord Vishnu in the form of Lord Vamana to Patal Loka. So, according to Hindu Mythology, the story of Vamana Jayanti begins with King Mahabali, who was a threat to all the deities. So it's believed that the one who completes the 100 yagnas will be very powerful and can rule the entire Earth.
King Mahabali started performing the yagna to rule the entire heaven and earth. The deities and devas sought help from Lord Vishnu and asked him to stop King Mahabali from being the ultimate ruler by completing his Yagna. So, on hearing this, Lord Vishnu took the form of Lord Vamana and promised to help the deities from King Mahabali. Furthermore, when Lord Vishnu reached there, King Mahabali was performing the Ashwamedha Yagna. So, Vamana Dev interrupted and asked for three steps of land.
On hearing this, Lord Vamana took a huge form where one step covered the entire universe, and the other covered the Earth. So, now Vamana Dev needs a place to keep the third step. In that situation, King Mahabali kept his head in front of Vamana's leg so that he could keep this third step. Vamana Dev was impressed that King Mahabali kept his promise, so he gave King Mahabali an allowance to visit Earth once a year.
Vamana Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Vamana to Sage Kashyapa and his wife, Aditi. It is also celebrated to mark the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of a human being because all the other four incarnations of Vishnu Bhagwan were in the form of animals. Moreover, this festival is also celebrated by the people of South India, especially by Malayalis and Kerala people, as the homecoming of King Mahabali.
Mahabali was a cruel king but also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, who had granted him the allowance to visit Earth every year. So, this visit of King Mahabali to Earth is celebrated as Onam in South India. Furthermore, it’s believed that people who worship Lord Vamana with utmost devotion and observers vrat on this day will be free from all worldly suffering and can live a life full of freedom and independence.
