The festival of Gouri Pooja is celebrated as the union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, and the homecoming of Goddess Gauri as an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Let’s look at the different mythology stories associated with this festival:
According to the Shiva Purana, Goddess Sati performed rigorous penance to win Lord Shiva's love and marry him. She lived a simple life for years and showed great dedication and perseverance in her marriage. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva finally agreed to marry her and make Sati his consort. This story symbolises the power of faith and devotion, encouraging women to uphold patience and dedication.
As per Hindu mythology, Goddess Gauri is one of the incarnations of Maa Parvati (Lord Ganesha’s mother and Lord Shiva’s consort). This mythological story tells the relation between Gauri and Ganesh. Interestingly, Maharashtrian culture considers Goddess Gauri to be Lord Ganesha’s sister. This is why, during Ganapati Chaturthi, people believe Goddess Gauri visits her brother on Earth and then travels back to Kailash.
The rituals of Gowri Pooja show the relationship between Gauri and Ganesha. Hence the celebration of Gauri Puja begins with Gauri Awahan, where the Goddess is welcomed, followed by Gauri Puja and then Gauri Visarjan.
The rituals of Gouri Pooja start by welcoming the goddess and bringing her clay idols into the home. The idol is then placed on a place decorated with flowers, haldi, and kumkum.
On the special Gowri Pooja day, Gauri mata is offered with haldi, kumkum, coconut and betel leaves. Moreover, special bhogs like modak, puran poli, and kheer are prepared and provided to Gauri. Devotees also perform Satyanarayana Katha at their house on the day of Gauri Pujan.
