Mythology and the Gauri Pujan Vrat Katha

The festival of Gouri Pooja is celebrated as the union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, and the homecoming of Goddess Gauri as an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Let’s look at the different mythology stories associated with this festival:

The Union of Goddess Gauri and Lord Shiva

According to the Shiva Purana, Goddess Sati performed rigorous penance to win Lord Shiva's love and marry him. She lived a simple life for years and showed great dedication and perseverance in her marriage. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva finally agreed to marry her and make Sati his consort. This story symbolises the power of faith and devotion, encouraging women to uphold patience and dedication.

Gauri’s Visit to Her Brother Ganesha

As per Hindu mythology, Goddess Gauri is one of the incarnations of Maa Parvati (Lord Ganesha’s mother and Lord Shiva’s consort). This mythological story tells the relation between Gauri and Ganesh. Interestingly, Maharashtrian culture considers Goddess Gauri to be Lord Ganesha’s sister. This is why, during Ganapati Chaturthi, people believe Goddess Gauri visits her brother on Earth and then travels back to Kailash.
