Vamana Jayanti, or Vamana Dwadashi, celebrates the birth of Lord Vamana, the fifth avatar of Vishnu. This day honours the dwarf Brahmin form Vishnu took to cleverly defeat the generous King Mahabali and save the heavens.
Vamana Jayanti is traditionally celebrated on the Dwadashi Tithi (12th day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
According to the Bhagavata Purana, the Vamana Jayanti story begins with King Mahabali, who was a threat to all the deities. At that time, it was believed that the one who completes the 100 yagnas would be very powerful and could rule the entire Earth.
King Mahabali started performing the yagna to rule the. The deities and devas sought help from Lord Vishnu and asked him to stop King Mahabali from being the ultimate ruler. Upon hearing this, Lord Vishnu took the form of Lord Vamana and promised to help the deities.
When Lord Vishnu reached, he saw Mahabali performing the Ashwamedha Yagna. Mahabali was a king who would never let someone return empty-handed from his door. Knowing this quality of the King, Lord Vishnu asked him for a piece of land equal to three footsteps, and the King agreed.
On hearing this, Lord Vamana took a huge form, covering the entire universe with one step and the other covering the Earth. So, now Vamana Dev needs a place to keep the third step.
In that situation, King Mahabali kept his head in front of Vamana's leg. Vamana Dev was impressed that King Mahabali kept his promise, so he gave King Mahabali an allowance to visit Earth once a year.
Mahabali was a compassionate king and a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, who had allowed him to visit Earth every year. King Mahabali's visit to Earth is celebrated as Onam in South India.
