According to Hindu mythology, the birth of Lord Hanuman took place in the Treta Yuga, the second of the four Yugas (ages) in Hindu cosmology. He was born to Anjana, an Apsara (celestial nymph) who was cursed to be born as a monkey, and Kesari, the king of the monkeys.
As the story goes, Anjana was meditating and performing penance to Lord Shiva to seek his blessings for a son. Lord Shiva, happy with penance, gave a boon to Anjana. One day, while Anjana was wandering in the forest, she saw a fruit that she found very tempting. However, the fruit was a divine offering meant for Lord Shiva. So, despite Kesari's warning, Anjana ate the fruit, which led to the curse of being born as a monkey.
She then prayed to the god of wind, Vayu dev, to find a way out of her misery. Thus, Lord Vayu carried the divine child, widely known as Kesari, to the womb of Anjana. On the full moon day of the month of Chaitra, Lord Hanuman was born, and his birth is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti by Hindus worldwide.
Legend has it that Hanuman was born with tremendous strength and agility and could fly and change his shape at will. However, as a child, he was mischievous and caused trouble for sages and other holy men. Once, he even tried to swallow the sun, mistaking it for a fruit.
As Hanuman grew older, he became a loyal devotee of Lord Rama, the hero of the Ramayana. Hanuman helped Rama rescue his wife, Sita, from the demon king Ravana, who had abducted her. Hanuman's devotion to Rama and his selflessness has made him a symbol of loyalty.
