Maa Laxmi

Laxmi Maa is a Hindu Goddess of wealth and good fortune. The word Laxmi was derived from the Sanskrit wordLaksya, and she is one of the household goddesses of every Hindu family and is worshipped daily. The month of October is dedicated specifically to Goddess Laxmi.

Laxmi was the daughter of the goddess Durga and the wife of Lord Vishnu. It is believed in Hindu mythology that she took different forms to be with him in each of his manifestations. She is supposed to bless her devotees with fulfilment and comfort. Every God and goddess has equal grace and respect in the eye of their devotees.

Daughter of Milky Ocean

According to the Hindu culture, it is believed that goddess Laxmi was already in this world blessing good fortune upon the other gods, but when the warrior god became angry instead of fighting off the demons to protect the world. Goddess Laxmi decided to leave this world and go into the sea of Milk or the Milky Ocean, one of Hinduism's seven oceans.

After Goddess Laxmi left, all the gods were invaded by the demons. Lord Vishnu, the husband of Goddess Laxmi, told all the gods to stir the Milk out of the ocean to bring back goddess Laxmi. Almost after 1,000 years of this incident, Goddess Laxmi finally came out of the sea floating on the lotus, which is why we see holding or standing upon the lotus in Hindu art.

Festival of Light Diwali

Have you ever thought about why we celebrate Diwali and how it came into existence? Let’s read through and learn more about the festival of Light ‘Diwali’. Of course, we already know that we celebrate Diwali in the name of Goddess Laxmi, which is celebrated worldwide, but let’s understand why we celebrate Diwali.

All the Hindu Gods battled Demons in all the stories of Laxmi. In the Ramayana, Rama was one of Vishnu’s personifications who fought the demon king. The demon king later kidnaps Sita, Laxmi’s incarnation, and is married to Rama. When Rama rescues Sita, the people help them to reach home by lighting candles to fade away the darkness. This practice has been followed over the years, and that’s how the festival of light came into existence. Since then, every Hindu has lit candles and diyas to celebrate and honor the story of the Ramayana and help guide Maa Laxmi to bring fortune to every household.
