Ashtakam

Ashtakam, also pronounced as Astakam, is a Sanskrit word derived from the word ‘Asta’, meaning eight. During the great era of Sanskrit and Ancient Indian literature, Ashtakams were indeed a remarkably well-liked and widely acknowledged form of spiritual and universal poetry. It is a form of a poem written in eight stanzas, where each stanza consists of four lines, so the Ashtakam comprises 32 lines.

The poem was written in a way that every line ends with a rhyming word. A few Ashtakams do not follow the standard format, though.

In the above lines we have explained the ashtakam meaning and before you move ahead with ready more about it, let us inform you that you can download the pdf of Ashtakam from InstaAstro website.

The legend behind the existence of Ashtakam

Bhagavan Adi Shankaracharya was regarded as Sannyasi (a person who has left all the worldly pleasures and chosen to lead a solitary life). Although certain historical texts suggest that he existed earlier, it is generally agreed that he lived around one thousand-two hundred years ago. Adi Shankaracharya, who was thought to be a manifestation of Lord Siva, had a brief life of only 32 years. Numerous uplifting stories exist regarding him.

He wrote a lot of religious scriptures. Some of which are 72 philosophical and devotional melodies, including Nirvana Shalkam, Sivananda Lahari, Maneesha Panchakam and Soundarya Lahari.

Additionally, he enclosed 18 interpretations of the most important writings, including the Bhagavad Gita, the Brahma Sutras, and 12 important Upanishads.

In addition to his extraordinary intelligence and leadership abilities, Shankaracharya was a beautiful poet with a heart overflowing with Divine Love.

The reason why Adi Sankaracharya wrote Akashtam

Adi Sankaracharya wrote the poem to praise different deities, and not only that, he has made a lot of contributions towards the Hindu philosophy. Moreover, he has written almost 30 Ashtakam to glorify the other Gods. Many intellectual scholars were amazed to see how Adi Sankaracharya could write so much in such a short period.

He believed that Chitta Shuddhi was very important. First, let me tell you what Chitta Shuddhi means. Chitta means consciousness, and Shuddhi means purification, so to bring that purification within himself, he believed self-realisation was essential. So he started composing hymns and poems and told people to worship and praise the lord so that people can avail the ashtakam benefits in a way that people could cleanse and refine their minds and soul from all the negativity.
